FOB vs. CIF vs. DDP: Which Trade Term Should Importers Choose?
When negotiating purchasing contracts with international manufacturers (such as on Alibaba or direct factory contracts), the majority of quotes default to one of three common trade terms: FOB, CIF, or DDP. Choosing the wrong term can cost thousands of dollars in surprise destination terminal fees, lost transit tracking, or compliance penalties.
1. Direct Comparison: FOB vs. CIF vs. DDP
| Feature | FOB (Free on Board) | CIF (Cost, Ins & Freight) | DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who controls freight? | Buyer controls shipping | Seller controls shipping | Seller controls shipping |
| Where does risk transfer? | When loaded on vessel at origin | When loaded on vessel at origin | At buyer's warehouse door |
| Destination port charges | Paid by buyer (negotiated rate) | Paid by buyer (often inflated) | Paid by seller |
| Customs clearance & taxes | Buyer files entry & pays duties | Buyer files entry & pays duties | Seller handles entry & pays duties |
| Amazon FBA compatibility | Excellent (via 3PL forwarder) | Poor (Amazon rejects CIF cargo) | Good (hands-off turnkey) |
2. The Danger of CIF: The "Kickback" Freight Trap
On paper, CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) looks like an attractive bargain because the supplier pays for ocean transit. However, experienced importers actively avoid CIF for Less-than-Container Load (LCL) shipments due to the destination surcharge trap.
Suppliers often use origin forwarders who offer them artificially cheap or even "free" ocean freight. The forwarder recovers their profit margin by handing the cargo over to a partner Container Freight Station (CFS) at your destination port, who presents you with exorbitant, non-negotiable destination fees ($80–$150/CBM for CFS handling, document surrender, and port deconsolidation).
3. When Should You Use DDP?
DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) is the "Amazon Prime of international trade." The factory or their integrated forwarder manages everything: manufacturing, export, ocean/air shipping, customs clearance, payment of import tariffs, and final truck delivery straight to your warehouse or Amazon FBA fulfillment center.
Pros of DDP: Zero operational headaches. You know the exact landed cost per unit upfront.
Cons of DDP: The seller adds a 15% to 30% margin on top of freight and duty costs for taking on the liability. Furthermore, if the seller misclassifies your HTSUS code or undervalues the invoice to avoid taxes, U.S. Customs can still hold the consignee liable.
4. Recommendations for Amazon FBA & E-Commerce Sellers
- Small orders (< 2 CBM or under $2,000): Use DDP Air Express for speed and turnkey simplicity.
- Commercial orders (full pallets or FCL containers): Use FOB (or FCA). Partner with a licensed domestic freight forwarder who can arrange ocean transit, clear customs in your business name, and book direct carrier appointments with Amazon Fulfillment Centers.
- Never ship CIF directly to Amazon: Amazon fulfillment centers will reject shipments that require destination customs clearance or payment of terminal handling fees.
